BIEBER FEVER FIASCO; WEBSITE GOOF MAKES CNY FAMILY'S PHONE RING OFF HOOK.(CNY)(Interview)

Byline: Hart Seely Staff writer

When the phone started ringing last week on Monday night, Mary Ann Houghton, of North Syracuse, had no idea what was coming. Nor did her sons -- Eric and Anthony McGriff, both 17, and Jordan McGriff, 14.

Eric, a senior at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, recalled the situation for Hart Seely.

When did the calls start?

It was about 9:30, last Monday night. It was random people, calling. They kept asking for Justin Bieber. We thought it was some kind of prank.

Who were the callers?

A lot of it was young kids and teenagers. We didn't really have too many adults.

So what did you tell them?

We'd just say, "This isn't Justin Bieber's house. This is a private residence. Please do not call again."

But they kept calling?

Yeah. We were wondering, so that night, we called the cable company, Time-Warner Cable, to see if there was some kind of mix-up. They Googled our phone number and sure enough, they found that on a website -- (maybenow.com) -- it said our number was Justin Bieber's.

So the callers thought you were Justin Bieber?

Yeah. A lot of them didn't even listen to our voices. They would automatically start screaming or crying. They'd lose it. They thought they were talking to Justin Bieber, and they were so sure of it, I mean -- they just went crazy.

Do you remember the first one?

Yeah. It was the next day. I was pretty tired Monday night, so I went to bed. You'd answer, and there would be just a big scream in your ear, or someone would start crying. It would be a young girl. My first one, she just screamed. "Oh, my gosh! It's Justin Bieber!"

What did you say?

I said, "This isn't Justin Bieber. Please do not call again." Basically, that's what my mom had been telling them.

How many calls that first night?

That first night? Oh -- only about 20 to 30.

Only 20 to 30?

Yeah. Over a few hours. Well, actually, it was all night.

Did you take the phone off the hook?

We left it on, I guess, out of the fear that something could happen and we'd need the phone on. And we didn't expect them to continue.

How many did you get Tuesday?

We were at school, so we didn't really check how many were coming throughout the day. But when we were home -- I don't know -- a couple hundred, throughout the day. We'd come home to answering-machine messages from people who don't like Justin Bieber. They'd swear into the machine. You had little girls asking you out on dates. You looked at the caller ID and see a different state, different state, different state -- calls from all over the country.

How long did the calls last?

Five days. On the fifth day, our phone number was changed.

What kind of traffic did you get?

They just kept coming. The amount per day varied, but it was pretty steady. You could pretty much guarantee two to five calls within every 15 minutes. It was hectic.

So on Friday, Time-Warner gave up and just switched the number?

Yeah. We had given up. My mom called and said, "Look, we need to change our number, we can't get anything done."

So you all got a glimpse of what it's like to be Justin Bieber?

Yeah. I didn't know he had to deal with this. But I'm not sure how many people would have his actual phone number, because it would be safely guarded.

What's your take on the average Justin Bieber fan?

Most Justin Bieber fans are young, I guess, elementary school to teenage girls. It gets annoying when you're trying to do homework or surf the Internet or watch TV, and it comes up on the TV saying, phone call from this state, you answer it, and you get a loud scream in your ear. Or someone crying. Or someone hanging up because they don't think it's you -- and then calling right back, because they think they dialed the wrong number. It gets a little annoying.

Did you ever converse with anybody?

Everybody asks, did you play along? And for a little bit, we tried. We figured, this mix-up happened, so we might as well have some fun. My little brother (Jordan) -- he would pretend to be Justin Bieber. The girls would go crazy. He'd say, "OK, you can't keep calling here. I need to go record a song in the studio."... We would say, "This isn't Justin. This is a private house." And some just wouldn't believe you. They would say, "Oh, he doesn't want me to have his private number. He's just pretending." And we would say, "NO, THIS IS NOT JUSTIN BIEBER!"

So, after all this, would you want to be Justin Bieber?

With all the fans and everything, I guess it would get a little hectic. I've never been a celebrity, so I don't know. But I wouldn't want to be Justin Bieber.

So now, everything back to normal.

Yeah. I can do my homework, and I can go to bed and not have to hear all the calls. It's a lot less stressful. My mom can get a good night's sleep, not having to be up at 4 a.m. and saying, "This is not Justin Bieber's residence." Believe me, it's a lot calmer.

Hart Seely can be reached at hseely@syracuse.com or 470-2247.

TEEN POP STAR Justin Bieber does not share a phone number with a North Syracuse family, but that didn't stop a legion of the singer's fans from calling. Bieber is shown promoting his upcoming movie, "Never Say Never," on an episode of BET's "106 & Park" show earlier this month.

Smart move boosts Vodafone; yourmoney.(Business)

Byline: CLINTON MANNING

SOARING smart-phone sales helped Vodafone to its biggest rise in UK revenue for three and a half years. It raked in pounds 1.26billion in the last three months of 2010. The 7% rise, the biggest since the second quarter of 2007, was driven by signing up 195,000 extra customers, taking the total to more than 19million. More than a quarter of them now have devices such as a Blackberry of iPhone, to access the internet and send messages. It boosted UK data revenue by 30%, helping offset a slight fall in money from calls.

Preview: State of the Union address to focus on economy.(Front)

By Julie Pace

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON

Under pressure to energize the economy, President Barack Obama said Saturday he will use his State of the Union address to outline an agenda to create jobs now and boost American competitiveness over the long term.

Heading quickly into re-election mode, Obama is expected to use Tuesday's prime-time speech to promote spending on innovation while also promising to reduce the national debt and cooperate with emboldened Republicans.

"I'm focused on making sure the economy is working for everybody, for the entire American family," Obama said Saturday in an uncommon preview of his speech, offered up in an online video to his supporters late Saturday afternoon. The president announced that the economy would be the main topic of his speech, a nod to how important that issue is to the country's standing and his own as well.

At the halfway point of his term, Obama said the economy is on firmer footing than it was two years ago: It is growing again, albeit slowly, while the stock market is rising, and corporate profits are climbing. But with the unemployment rate stubbornly stuck above 9 percent, Obama will signal a shift Tuesday from short-term stabilization policies toward ones focused on job creation and longer-term growth.

Obama offered no details on proposals he will call for in his address, though he has offered hints in recent weeks.

Perhaps the clearest came in a speech in North Carolina last month, one that will likely serve as a template of what the nation is about to hear. Obama said then that making America more competitive means investing in a more educated work force, committing more to research and technology, and improving everything from highways and airports to high-speed Internet.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama also highlighted free trade as a way to increase U.S. exports and put Americans to work.

"That's how we'll create jobs today," Obama said. "That's how we'll make America more competitive tomorrow. And that's how we'll win the future."

Obama's challenge will be to find the money and the political will to spend it, at a time when he's pledged to reduce spending and tackle the mountainous debt. In his preview Saturday, Obama said he would emphasize fiscal restraint Tuesday, but didn't go into detail, saying only that any spending cuts should be done in a "responsible way."

President Barack Obama's preview of his planned address Tuesday to Congress and the nation was unusual. But it was in keeping with his drumbeat on the need to spur job creation.

Catalina Card Services Ties Discounted Mobile Services To New Card.(News)

Byline: Will Hernandez

Catalina Card Services Inc. is attempting to differentiate itself in the crowded general-purpose prepaid debit card market with a product that offers cardholders low-cost mobile phone services.

The Danville, Calif.-based prepaid card provider has an agreement with Simple Mobile Inc. that enables cardholders to sign up for an unlimited talk, text and Internet-access plan for $45 per month, $15 per month less than what Simple offers other consumers for the same package.

Simple Mobile deducts the monthly bill from the cardholder's prepaid account.

The Simple offer is necessary to help Catalina compete with more well-known prepaid providers and to create stickiness around the MasterCard-branded InFusion card, which launched Jan. 11, contends Matt Montes, Catalina president.

"You're always looking for ways to add value and persistent use to these cards," Montes tells PaymentsSource.

The Simple Mobile offer will be available next month after Catalina switches from Galileo Processing Inc. to Fidelity National Information Services Inc. for transaction processing. MetaBank issues the cards.

Montes, who founded prepaid marketer AccountNow Inc., saw more consumers use his former company's cards when it added mobile minute top-ups. The majority of consumers' monthly spend went to mobile services, he says.

Catalina plans to add other services such as discounted automobile insurance rates. As with the Simple Mobile deal, Montes wants to negotiate lower rates for InFusion cardholders.

"We have to do things that distinguish ourselves from the competitors out there and give more value," Montes says.

Brian Riley, a research director in the bank cards practice at TowerGroup, believes Catalina has the right idea with its add-on services.

"A big challenge in the industry at the moment is building long-term use of these cards," he says. "This is a step in the right direction for Catalina."

Catalina has two card-fee structures. Cardholders who use direct deposit receive a free card with a $3.50 monthly maintenance fee. Other users pay $6.50 for the card plus $6.50 monthly. Catalina charges cardholders $1.50 for all ATM cash withdrawals. Signature-debit transactions are free. PIN-debit purchases are 50 cents each.

The PIN-debit brands that appear on the card include Maestro, Cirrus, Interlink, Star and Plus.

Market Maker Surveillance Report. ORCL, F, NOVL, STD, IVV, SPY, Bullishly Biased Price Friction For Tuesday, January 18th 2011.

M2 PRESSWIRE-January 19, 2011-BUYINS.NET: Market Maker Surveillance Report. ORCL, F, NOVL, STD, IVV, SPY, Bullishly Biased Price Friction For Tuesday, January 18th 2011(C)1994-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:19012011

BUYINS.NET / www.buyins.net, announced today its proprietary Market Maker Friction Factor Report for Tuesday. Since October 2008 market makers are now required to be on the bid as much as they are on the offer and for like amounts of stock. This Fair Market Making Requirement is designed to prevent market makers from manipulating stock prices. On Tuesday there were 2644 companies with "abnormal" market making, 2837 companies with positive Friction Factors and 2568 companies with negative Friction Factors. Here is a list of the top companies with Abnormal Price Friction (bullish bias) in their stock prices. This means that there was more selling than buying in the stocks and their stock prices rose. ORACLE CORP (NASDAQ:ORCL), FORD MOTOR CO (NYSE:F), NOVELL INC (NASDAQ:NOVL), BANCO SANTANDER SA-SPON ADR (NYSE:STD), ISHARES S&P 500 INDEX FUND (NYSE:IVV), SPDR S&P 500 ETF TRUST (NYSE:SPY). To access Friction Factor, Naked Short Data and SqueezeTrigger Prices on all stocks please visit http://www.buyins.net .

Market Maker Friction Factor is shown in the chart below:

Symbol Change Percent Buy Volume Buy %% Sell Volume Sell %% Net Volume Friction

ORCL $0.400 1.30% 12,606,612 46.84% 16,786,727 62.38% -4,180,115 Abnormal

F $0.060 0.32% 17,261,221 43.49% 19,678,267 49.58% -2,417,046 Abnormal

NOVL $0.010 0.17% 3,198,869 30.43% 7,373,038 70.13% -4,174,169 Abnormal

STD $0.250 2.18% 10,306,995 40.98% 12,994,350 51.67% -2,687,355 Abnormal

IVV $0.760 0.59% 1,829,165 29.40% 4,304,189 69.18% -2,475,024 Abnormal

SPY $0.580 0.45% 51,529,592 45.47% 60,214,070 53.14% -8,684,478 Abnormal

Analysis of the Friction Factor chart above shows that each of the six stocks mentioned above had more selling than buying on Tuesday and their stock prices rose. The Friction Factor displays how many more shares of buying than selling are required to move a stock higher by one cent or how many more shares of selling than buying moves a stock lower by 1 cent.

For example, the chart above shows SPY with 8,684,478 greater shares of selling than buying (NetVol) and the stock price was up $0.58000. This means the Market Makers were trading the stock in a way inconsistent with normal supply and demand (Economics 101); more selling than buying should cause prices to drop.

Child porn perv: 'I'm not ashamed'.

AN INTERNET pervert caught with almost 1,300 child porn images has claimed that he is not a danger to kids.

Troubled Ivan Carson says he has nothing to be ashamed of and claims he was confused when he downloaded the sickening images due to mixing alcohol with drugs.

The 56-year-old from south Belfast will be sentenced at Downpatrick Crown Court on Tuesday.

Cops arrested him at his home in August 2009 -- a few weeks after he buried his 92-year-old mother Ruby.

They seized the car fanatic's computer and discovered 1,243 indecent photos of kids stored on the hard-drive. He later pleaded guilty to downloading the images which last week Judge Geoffrey Miller, who will pass sentence on the sex offender, said "fall in the more serious end of the possession threshold".

When Sunday Life called to Carson's Downshire Park South home last week he invited us inside his grotty living room and told how he had been mixing booze with prescription pills when first came across the child porn.

The part-time sculptor said: "I was on the computer trying to download Bob Dylan albums and I clicked on a link and all the child porn stuff came down.

"I did look at it. Am I ashamed? I don't know if that's the right word."

Carson claimed the stress caused by his mother's death tipped him over the edge.

He added: "When she died I was a mess. I was taking Seroxat anti-depressant tablets and drinking non-stop.

"At first it was a bottle of whiskey a day and then it became a litre of whiskey a day."

Carson, who makes bronze sculptures in his spare time, explained how he began to look at more indecent pictures of children.

But he denied he was turned on by the sickening images.

"At first I was searching the Internet for young models for my sculpting, but then I started looking at photos of kids in bikinis and then ones of them naked," said Carson.

"I never pleasured myself to them. The Seroxat made me impotent, so that would have been impossible."

After being sentenced on Tuesday, Carson will have to sign the Sex Offenders' Register.

He denies being a danger to kids and says he wants to continue to live in the house where he has lived all his life.

"I get on well with my neighbours," he said.

"I want to take my punishment and make myself a better person. I accept that I deserve to be punished."

Carson used to invite children into his garden to help him work on restoring old cars.

Now he says the gates of his home will be firmly closed to kids.
